Caring for your Hair Extensions
Thank you for choosing to have your hair extensions applied at Polaris Hair salon, now we want to help you maintain them and care for them to ensure you get to enjoy them for a long time.
Washing – please wait 48 hours before washing. Keep your hair extensions clean & untangled. We will give you a complimentary brush that is recommended for you to use whenever brushing your new hair extensions. Hair tangles when dirt & sweat build up so wash your hair after exercise & swimming. Brush your hair & remove all tangles before washing it. NEVER brush wet hair. It is recommended to wash your hair with cool or warm water. When drying, Pat hair dry with towel rather than rubbing, allow hair to air dry or if using a hair dryer make sure that you are using a heat protectant. Use high quality salon grade hair care products but don’t overdo it, too much hair care product can cause build up & tangling over time, so you want to be careful with the amount of product you use. Never use any products containing oil on the roots/bonds, alcohol or ethanol as this can damage the hair extensions & also wear down on the adhesive. When using conditioner do not apply conditioner to your scalp, condition from mid-shaft to ends only.
Sleeping - One common mistake is to keep the hair wet, especially when sleeping. Never sleep with wet hair extensions and make sure your hair is completely dry before bed as it can damage your extensions by tangling & breaking, there is also more chance of them slipping when wet. If using a hair dryer, make sure that you are not applying direct heat to the hair. For that, you can use the diffuser attachment in the dryer using a heat protectant also. Always make sure the hair is dry and gently pulled up/back or preferably put into a braid/plait at night.
Brushing - Always use the hair extension loop brush we supply to you on your first appointment, slowly release the knots from the bottom first & work your way upwards, this is gentle & avoids hair breakage. Brush the hair in a downward motion with a hair extension brush several times a day. Be sure to brush properly, holding the roots to prevent pulling on the bonds, use a wide tooth comb to remove tangles if needed. It is recommended to wear your hair up or in a ponytail when you exercise.
Swimming - Chlorine & salt water can cause hair to become dry, brittle, tangled & matte decreasing the longevity of the extensions. Keep your hair away from chlorine & salt water when possible. It is better to try avoid wetting your hair when swimming, but even then your hair is still exposed to the chemicals & salt water so make sure the chemicals don't stay in the hair for too long. Shampoo your hair immediately after swimming. If possible wear a cap, keep your hair out of the water or apply a treatment mask to the hair before swimming to help act as a barrier. For nano bead don’t allow the bonds to stay wet for too long blow dry bonds as soon as possible.
Oils, nutrients & products – Your hair extensions need lots of moisture now that they have lost their natural nutrient supply. Low pH/High moisturising shampoo, conditioner & treatments are great for the hair extensions. Make sure your products are sulphate, paraben & protein free to keep hair extensions in good condition. Quality argan Oils, coconut oil and moisturising serums are great for the mid lengths & ends of your extensions to help them feel soft, shiny & smooth. If you feel your extensions are bit dry the products being used may not be moisturising enough so we suggest you try another product. There are certainly many products out there that will be great for your extensions & we haven’t tested them all but if you are experiencing any issues, please stop using your products and contact us ASAP, so we can look into it before it does cause any significant damage. Protein on your hair extensions can throw off the moisture balance making hair more prone to breakage, frizz and damage. Due to the extensions have already undergone an intense chemical process you cannot use keratin or protein on your hair extensions as they are unable to absorb it correctly. Purple shampoos are extremely drying on your hair and the extensions it will cause them to become dry, brittle & tangle, we understand you need to use these to tone your hair but please use very sparingly, only when needed not every wash as it decreases the longevity of the extensions, also please keep in mind 2 in 1 shampoos, anti-dandruff & clarifying shampoos & saunas can also be drying if used constantly.
Itchiness – Some people experience itchiness for the first week or settling in period and this is normal. Itchiness may also occur when you are due for maintenance if there is a lot of hair & sweat build up in your extensions. Extreme itchiness & sores developing may mean you are having an allergic reaction, please have your extensions removed.
Colouring – You can darken but never lighten the hair extensions, you MUST NOT perm or bleach them, this will ruin the hair extensions as they are very porous. Don’t colour or perform any other chemical process to your own hair extensions, let your stylist take care of that. If you do want to colour your hair extensions - only go DARKER, and use a semi-permanent professional dye. No box dyes or permanent dyes as these dry, damage and tangle the extensions. You can use toner but we advise that you do a spot test first, as the colour will vary from batch to batch. Use no more than 3% developer. Please note you will be doing this at your own risk we do not guarantee any colouring not performed by our hair specialists.
Static - if there isn’t any humidity or moisture in your hair, like on a dry winter morning, the charge causes your strands to repel from another like a magnet. In short, your hair is literally so full of electrons that it can’t stand itself. One of the reasons that your hair is conducting an electric charge is that it’s dehydrated. During the winter, our strands can become dry due to lack of moisture in the air. Needless to say the cold winter winds & warm indoor heat are not doing your hair any favors. Give your hair some TLC by moisturising your strands with argan oil, this powerful oil is full of nutrients that can help to replenish the moisture in your hair. A good leave-in conditioner can also help keep fly-aways at bay. If you still find there is static between your extensions and where the ends of your natural hair connects you may need to trim any split ends.
Adhesive softening & stickiness - Avoid any products containing sulfate, keratin, oil, alcohol or ethanol on the roots/bonds as these can wear down the bonds & cause them to slip. Keep your hair extensions clean; extensions can slip when you have added oil or product buildup in the roots, that doesn't mean you have to wash them every day, but be sure to use dry shampoo to remove oil and product buildup in between washes. When using serums or oils avoid contact with the bonds, use on mid length to ends only. High heat including hot Showers, Hair Dryers & Straighteners can cause the bonds to become weak so take care while washing & styling.
Maintenance – Keratin bonds require no maintenance, any old natural hair fall will become caught in the extension, finger separation of the applied extensions will help avoid matting & to keep your hair healthy, Removal/replacement of keratin bonds are recommended every 3-5 month to keep your hair healthy, length of time to leave them in is depending on how fine your natural hair is and the condition of your natural hair.
Heat: Heat is one of your hair's biggest enemy, the more you use it, the shorter your hair extensions will last. You can use blow dryers and curling irons, however, when using hot tools be sure to use a heat protectant spray! The more you use heat on your hair, the shorter the life-span of the hair extensions. Do not use a flat iron directly on the bonds.
Hair loss - Since a person’s average natural hair loss is between 50-100 strands, even up to 150 in some cases per day, that’s 6300 strands over a 6 week period. You will see a small amount of this naturally released hair in between the bonds at time of removal. This is normal and should not be interpreted as hair loss due to wearing hair extensions.
After complete removal – When you have decided you no longer want to wear your hair extensions Please DO NOT remove your own extensions. Please contact us to have your extensions professionally removed, after removal hair will feel thin for a little while afterwards, this is not always damage it is just the fact that you are used to the extra thickness of the hair extensions & you will soon get used to your own natural hair again.
You MUST come back or notify us within the first 2 weeks if your hair has matted, gone dry or if you have any other issues as they will occur in the first 2 weeks if there is a problem with the hair.
Enjoy your new long hair, Thank you xx
